Thailand's Nan province is battling a devastating flood crisis that has claimed two lives and affected more than 16,000 residents across 8,000 households as of Wednesday afternoon. The disaster, fuelled by a powerful monsoon trough dumping torrential rainfall across the northern region, has forced authorities to issue critical red alerts and prepare for potential mass evacuations. The scale of the emergency reflects the vulnerability of northern Thai communities to seasonal monsoon flooding, a recurring threat that underscores the region's infrastructure and disaster preparedness challenges.

The first fatality involved an elderly resident confined to bed in Sila Phet subdistrict, Pua district, who could not flee without assistance. Large flood barriers, colloquially termed big bags, were positioned across vulnerable gaps behind Ban Nam Lom community to shield Nan Hospital from inundation. Nan Highway District 2 closed Route 1256 between Pua, Doi Phu Kha National Park, and Bo Kluea after high-voltage electricity poles collapsed or became dangerously unstable along the corridor. Initial field assessments found 15 poles had completely fallen, with approximately 23 others visibly leaning, effectively severing road access. Authorities instructed residents and tourists to avoid the affected section entirely until engineers declared the route safe for traffic resumption, creating additional logistical complications for emergency operations and supply deliveries.
