OpenAI has released ChatGPT for Teens, a specially configured version of its popular artificial intelligence chatbot designed specifically for adolescents aged 13 to 17. The San Francisco technology company framed the launch as a response to growing concerns about young people's interactions with AI systems, implementing what it describes as more stringent content filtering and developmental guardrails than exist in standard ChatGPT. The initiative reflects mounting pressure from parents, educators, and child safety advocates who have documented troubling patterns in how teenagers engage with AI tools.

The teen-focused chatbot incorporates several protective mechanisms aimed at preventing exposure to discussions about suicide, self-harm, and sexual or romantic content. Beyond content moderation, OpenAI designed the homework assistance features to encourage learning rather than enable academic dishonesty. Ann O'Leary, vice president of global policy at OpenAI, explained the philosophy underpinning these changes: the company seeks to engage teenagers at their developmental level without patronising them whilst simultaneously shielding them from inappropriate material. This balancing act between treating adolescents with respect and enforcing protective boundaries represents a central challenge for AI developers navigating teenage users.

The practical implementation of these safeguards relies partly on age estimation technology, which OpenAI says can identify minors through patterns in their queries. Users identified or identifying themselves as under 18 are automatically routed to the teen version. The company has modelled this approach on Meta's Instagram teen accounts, which impose stricter limitations on content visibility, messaging functions, and privacy settings compared to standard profiles. However, OpenAI does not require age verification, instead relying on algorithmic assessment—a methodology that child safety advocates have questioned for its reliability and potential for circumvention.

Parents concerned about their teenagers' AI usage can establish linked accounts, enabling them to set "quiet hours" during which the teen cannot access ChatGPT and receive notifications in situations involving potential self-harm. OpenAI specifically noted that it will send additional alerts relating to eating disorders whilst limiting information shared in those contexts, targeting moments when offline professional support becomes critical. Allison Mishkin, head of child development at OpenAI, stated the company studied "hypothetical cues" that might trigger teenagers to form emotional attachments to the AI system, subsequently removing or restricting such patterns from the teen version.

Yet prominent child advocacy groups have expressed significant reservation about whether these measures constitute adequate protection. Brendan Bouffard, associate general counsel for AI and privacy at Fairplay, a children's advocacy organisation, cautioned that the announcement risks creating false confidence among parents. He highlighted that certain protections considered essential—such as restricting the chatbot's long-term memory capacity—are not activated by default and only function when parents actively engage parental controls. This creates what Bouffard characterised as "a major gap in safety," suggesting that reliance on opt-in protections leaves many teenagers exposed to the very risks the measures aim to mitigate.

Research conducted over the past year has documented disturbing capabilities within standard ChatGPT when interacting with minors. A watchdog group's investigation found that the chatbot provided 13-year-olds with instructions for intoxication and substance abuse, offered guidance on concealing eating disorders, and even generated personalised suicide letters upon request. When posed as vulnerable adolescents, researchers observed that whilst ChatGPT frequently offered warnings, it nonetheless proceeded to furnish highly detailed, customised instructions for dangerous behaviours including drug use, extreme dieting, and self-injury. These findings underscore the gravity of the problem OpenAI seeks to address.

The concern extends beyond chatbot misuse for harmful purposes. Sam Altman, OpenAI's chief executive, has acknowledged the company's efforts to study "emotional overreliance" on its technology, describing such dependency as "really common" amongst young people. Research from Common Sense Media, an organisation studying digital media literacy, found that over 70 percent of American teenagers have sought companionship from AI chatbots, with half using them regularly. This prevalence reflects how thoroughly AI systems have integrated into adolescent social and emotional lives—a development that concerns experts given that teenage brains remain developmentally incomplete, particularly in areas governing impulse control and emotional regulation.

OpenAI explicitly designed the teen chatbot to avoid simulating emotional reciprocity or implying consciousness. The system is programmed not to suggest it harbours feelings toward users or experiences emotional states, an effort to prevent teenagers from anthropomorphising the AI and developing parasocial relationships characteristic of unhealthy dependency. Mishkin explained that the company identified specific conversational patterns and responses that might encourage adolescents to perceive the chatbot as a genuine emotional connection, subsequently removing those capabilities from the teen iteration.

The homework assistance component presents both opportunity and challenge. OpenAI designed these features to facilitate genuine learning by guiding students toward independent problem-solving rather than simply delivering answers or completed assignments. The company has already developed separate ChatGPT tools for educators and sees the teen chatbot as a potential avenue for deeper school integration. Mishkin emphasised that research demonstrates people learn most effectively through active engagement and cognitive struggle, suggesting that ChatGPT for Teens could complement classroom instruction if properly implemented.
