Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has called on all public officials to exercise caution when making statements to the media, emphasising the need for respectful and measured communication at all times. Speaking after opening an industry dialogue on journalism standards in Putrajaya on June 15, she stressed that language used in public remarks should always remain appropriate and courteous.
Teo specifically flagged the importance of avoiding contentious issues related to race, religion and royalty — commonly referred to as 3R matters — both during election periods and in routine government communications. She noted that her guidance applied broadly across the civil service, not just to specific individuals or departments.
Her remarks came in response to controversy surrounding Mohd Hisyamuddin Ghazali, the newly appointed director-general of the Department of Community Communications (J-KOM), who has drawn criticism for allegedly employing unsuitable language since taking up the position on June 9. Mohd Hisyamuddin replaced Datuk Ismail Yusop in the role.
Teo indicated she had not yet arranged a meeting with Mohd Hisyamuddin to discuss these concerns in person, though she expressed her intention to do so. Her comments reflect ongoing efforts within government to maintain professional standards in public communications and ensure that official statements do not inadvertently inflame sensitivities on protected matters.
